Vitamin D: worth testing, easy to fix

Deficiency is common in northern climates and rarely causes obvious symptoms — but affects bone, immune, and mood health.

BloodworkPrevention

If you live north of Atlanta or Rome, spend most days indoors, or have darker skin, you're likely low on vitamin D from October through April. The test (25-hydroxy vitamin D) is inexpensive and the fix is a $10 bottle of D3.

Targets

  • Under 20 ng/mL (50 nmol/L) — deficient.
  • 20–30 ng/mL — insufficient for most people.
  • 30–50 ng/mL — a reasonable target.

Most adults do well on 1,000–2,000 IU of D3 daily. Higher doses need retesting.
